Problem:

As time has gone on, many individuals have always wondered, or questioned, what goes into voting? What is the process like? Who chooses to vote? Who chooses not to vote, and how can I respect their decisions? What does someone bring with them when they go to the polls? What is a “poll”? These are questions that many do ask, and at times go unanswered. VoteSource is a fictional organization looking to help answer some of those questions and educate many who simply don’t know.

Main Objectives:

  • Create an interactive infographic that is politically-neutral that simply answers questions.

  • Can’t use the basic “red, white and blue” color scheme, and need to be creative with various colors.

  • A responsive interface for viewing on both desktop and mobile.

  • Warm and welcoming design that attracts viewers, not repels.

Audience:

The audience for VoteSource are individuals who are simply curious. It is for all people who want to know more, young and old, and want to be kept in the loop about the process. Especially, young adults, minority groups, and non-citizens of the country who want to learn more. As well as, individuals who’ve voted in the past, but want to be kept up to date about updates and changes made to the process for future reference.

DESIGN PROCESS!

DESIGN

PROCESS!

Research

Research the current steps and information about the voting process that is sometimes unclear to many.

Empathize

Understand the frustrations of those who are sometimes left behind, but who are worthy of knowing this crucial information.

Design

Curated a style guide with a color and type study, iconography, and wireframe for a seamless and well thought out layout.

Implement

Prototyped a functional, and minimal interface that took the user to a specific section of the infographic.

Evaluate

Tested the prototype through user feedback sessions for future updates and improvements.

Blueprint:

This was going to be a one-page, scrolling infographic that would be prototyped to be viewed on the web. This project was to be completed within a month so, the design and layout needed to stay minimal and concise. Also, I needed to take into consideration the individuals who would be viewing this infographic and present the information in a way that would be welcoming for those who are neutral in their stand, but are curious about the voting process.

Research:

I took the time to research the different political parties, information about the majority anf minority of voters, as well as statistics that showed the turnout for select elections. This would help me in designing the graphs and charts with precise and accurate information. Also, ensuring the information presented is accurate to the regulations established today, but would refer those to their select state’s website for specific information regarding their own process. I took great care with the information for this infographic.

Design:

For the design, I used a bright and cheerful color palette that would attract many to the infographic. I used a style guide that used the colors of nature, something that all can enjoy, which included bright orange, forest green, and golden yellow. There is an off-white color to help bring a balance between the colors to ensure the layout isn’t overwhelming. I designed charts and graphs with the same color palette, for consistency. Using Figma, I created high-fidelity designs and prototypes, in both desktop and mobile, that would enable viewing in various device screens.

Constraints:

This project posed various challenges. With such a short deadline, I had no turnaround time for any errors or delays. Also, having to include such sensitive, unbiased, and neutral information, in one webpage, meant careful proofreading and checking for accuracy for all the information to fit and not crowd the page.

Also, having to include such sensitive, unbiased, and neutral information, in one webpage, meant careful proofreading and checking for accuracy for all the information to fit and not crowd the page.

Challenges:

This project was a challenge in accuracy and neutrality. Having to cross and fact check certain information to make sure they were accurate and up-to-date. Also, ensuring that the information presented was NOT in favor for one party over the other, or one candidate over the other, no matter the election. And, to ensure anyone, of any viewpoint, can view this infographic without feeling pressured to do anything, but be informed about something many choose to do, and respect those who choose not to.

Overall Outcome:

I am happy with the design and layout of this infographic, as it just presents the information. I learned so much about the voting process through this, but didn’t feel pressured to do anything with it. I am simply the designer.
